Conflict resolution / Managing anger

Over the years I have been a facilitator for very many Anger Management or Conflict Resolution training sessions. I am aware that I am over simplifying what takes place, but briefly, the participants needed to identify and process the source of their anger and eventually learn new skills and strategies to minimize the risk of their anger boiling over into unacceptable behaviour.

Does it work? Often yes, it does. Sometimes no, it does not. Why not? Because as with all my coaching, counselling and training my clients MUST have the desire to change. The key word is motivation. How strong is your desire to change, resolve your conflict, manage your anger. Be really truthful ... do you want to change ... really change?

Below you will find a list of appropriate strategies that I have used with individuals, couples and small groups.

(Not my photograph)

 •  Be on guard … recognise the signs ... know when your anger is starting to happen

•  Try and avoid situations that may result in ‘mad & bad' anger

•  Try not to let it show … but you can think thoughts inside your head!

•  Tell yourself out loud or inside your head to … ‘stop' … ‘stay cool'

•  Think some nice thoughts … imagine a really nice calm scene

•  Be aware of your breathing … in three … hold … out four …

•  Get the muscles in your body to relax …. clench …. let go

•  Count down from 10 … slowly. Respond rather than react

•  You have permission to walk away from very difficult situations

•  Have somewhere safe where you can … shout … stamp … express your anger

•  Congratulate yourself when you succeed … tell yourself ... ‘I'm an OK person'

•  Remember … ‘It's Cool to be Cool'
