Reiki Healing
Reiki (pronounced Ray-Key) is a system of natural healing thought to be over 2500 years old. Reiki is a Japanese word representing Universal Life Force; in other words the energy both around us and within us. Reiki is a way of activating, directing and applying natural energy for the promotion of health, balance and wholeness.
In the context of Reiki, the word healing has a somewhat different meaning from the widely accepted one. The more commonly accepted meaning of the word tends to refer to the curing of symptoms. The other meaning for healing , used in the practice of Reiki, as well as other related areas, is the return to greater wholeness. The theory states that there is an ideal or balanced form that each of us should achieve. This ideal form being the highest and clearest expression of who we are. Pain, stress, anxiety or disease comes from any deviation or imbalance between the persons current form in the physical world and this ideal form. Reiki healing aims to bring our current form into closer alignment with our ideal form. There is a tendency in this day and age to focus separately on our bodies and our minds and to think that religion (for those who believe) focuses separately on our spirit. Reiki healing, although not a religion, is based on a belief that we are the total of the three aspects - mind body and spirit.
My qualification in Reiki Healing (Reiki 1 & 2) has prepared and taught me to be the conduit or channel that passes the life force energy to other people by placing my hands close to their energy centres. The healing or balance will start to occur when the energy begins flowing, so accelerating the bodies own natural healing ability. Each Reiki healing is unique and normally promotes deep relaxation and releases blockages within our physical and emotional states. This will then allow the flow of energy through the body and release toxins. Once the blockages are removed it should be possible to receive, hold and store more energy to accelerate an improved state of balance. (Incidentally all healing sessions take place with the client either sitting down or lying down and always fully dressed.)
If you have looked at other parts of this site you will know that I am a teacher, counsellor and life coach. You may be wondering why I have also become involved with healing. I would want to stress a number of personal points.
Healing is not the same as curing. I do not believe that Reiki is something magical, miraculous, or for that matter directly linked to religion. But I have no doubt that it is effective and that it is spiritual in the sense that the word 'spirit' encapsulates all aspects of our human being. I also know that it is most effective when it takes place in and around a positive, trusting and 'faith full' mind set. But equally, clients who have originally been cynical have felt the warmth of healing and experienced the energy that reduces pain, stress and anxiety. There are definitely similarities with counselling and life coaching in so much that the relationship between the client and healer (or therapist) is central to the process. Other common factors are the importance of learning to let go of negative attitudes and thoughts, and a desire to improve self awareness. That is why I always recommend making contact with a practioner first to see if you feel a rapport or connection before you make any commitment.
What issues might be appropriate to take to a Reiki healer? Almost anything where there may be an imbalance and lack of harmony. This may include physical symptoms linked with long term conditions or shorter term medical traumas. Also health issues linked with stress or anxiety related to work, family or relationships. It is possible for Reiki healing to work in conjunction with coaching or counselling.
